Three Wheeled Buggies

Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver, even in tight places.

If you want a smooth ride with your baby, opt for models with 360deg front wheels that can swivel. They are, however, susceptible, to punctures. Be prepared with an emergency repair kit.

Frame made of sturdy material

Figures have just been released that show that the three-wheeled vehicle - a symbol of the noughties of more money than wisdom is in a decline. They've been replaced with four-wheelers that are able to handle a wider variety of terrain, yet still look elegant and easy to push.

The rule is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy ground and rough pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear allow you to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on a newborn baby and a toddler and found it very robust. It handled grass, cobbles and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said that "it is sturdy to push and extremely solid when traversing difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require periodic pumping) come with suspension built-in which was extremely comfortable for my children.

Another thing to consider is the size and shape. It should be big enough for your child's comfort and you will also want it to be able to recline for them to lie flat. Certain three-wheel buggies come with the option of lying flat, which lets your child face you, while other buggies only allow a face-to-parent one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or walking in muddy areas. This buggy is suitable for a single child starting from birth, and can be adapted to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from birth until age 4 and includes a bumper with a rain cover, an upgraded 5-point harness, and a big cushioned seat. The storage options are great too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets on the hood and a handy pouch on the back of the seat unit.

Wheels with larger diameter

Larger wheels mean that your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain - ideal for buggies that are off-road. They also allow you to move the pushchair around tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies feature swivel front wheels to assist you in maneuvering around corners with ease, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at the speed at which they can be pushed. This is particularly useful when you crash into the kerb or a tree. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to avoid hitting it.

A majority of 3 wheeled pushchairs have Hauck XL Air Wheels Pushchair with Neon Finishing-filled tyres, which allows them to navigate a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They're also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures and you'll need to have an repair kit, spare tube and pump handy.

Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and can easily move up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".

The downside of having larger wheels is that they make buggies quite large and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This can be an issue when you're using it for a jogger or to maneuver through narrow doorways when out and about. Fortunately, many models come with small folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels to make compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

A three-wheeler can be more maneuverable for children. The way they are built ensures that the front wheels spin on a dime and are incredibly easy to manoeuvre and are ideal for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3 wheel stroller reversible seat (click here to investigate)-wheeler with her newborn and toddler and stated: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the ground with the swivel rear wheel particularly useful. I was also impressed by the way it handled bumps, particularly when using the brake operated by hand. It was extremely stable when in the downhills or on uneven terrain."

The only drawback to this great maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it will be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces - something to be aware of if you live in a metropolitan region. If this is a problem then a 4-wheel buggy may be a better choice for you.
