Dead Coin Battery

A dead battery on a coin is the most common cause of a key fob that isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle. It usually shows indications before it dies, like a decrease in range or no power at all. It is simple to replace it with a new (CR2025) one at your local grocery store. Be aware that incorrect or defective batteries could cause damage to the key fob. Make sure that the replacement battery is the same size and voltage, and that it is the same specification.

If your device was exposed to clean water, such as rain or soapy tap water it is likely that the chip inside has been damaged due to corrosion. You could try cleaning the chip with isopropyl alcohol or an electronic cleaner to try to see if this helps but it is more likely that the chip has been fried.

A new key fob is the simplest solution. They are available at most major dealerships and can be fitted by a skilled mechanic. They can also be purchased on ebay. It is recommended to work on a surface with good lighting. This will make it easier to work on small parts inside. You will also be able to avoid placing things in the wrong place. Always work on your key fob in a location that is secure and safe.

Water Damage

If your key fob is damaged by dropping it in the pool or slipping it in the washing machine, you may think it's over, but there's still hope. If the circuit board inside the fob is exposed to water, it becomes an electrical conductor, which shorts the components. It also increases corrosion and rust.

This is a simple fix. Find something absorbent and place it inside the fob. A paper towl or tissue can be used. Then apply a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl ethanol to wipe down the circuit board as well as other components to eliminate any residue of battery acid and contamination. Let the fob air dry in a dry, warm environment for several weeks.

When the fob has been drained and the battery is replaced with a new one (of the same size and the same polarity ('+' with the upwards direction). It can be difficult to open up the fob in order to access the battery, but if you have a small screwdriver with a flat head handy it should slide in easily. After the fob is reassembled, it should work like normal. If it fails you may need to re-program it or replace the module.

Radio Interference

If a key fob is functioning correctly, it transmits the radio frequency signal which is received by the receiver module in your car. If the signal is damaged in any way your key fob will not perform as it should. This could be due to objects or weather conditions, or other transmitters operating on the same frequency in close proximity to your car.

This can cause your key fob to not activate the vehicle's features, such as the ignition switch or security system. It is recommended to replace the battery on your key fob.

Some LED lighting aftermarket that utilizes the same frequency as a remote control key fob could interfere with the signal, preventing it from reaching receiver modules. To avoid interference, the LED lighting must be switched off or switched to a different frequency.

If you've just replaced the battery on your key fob but the issue persists, it's possible that the antenna of your key fob is damaged or inoperable. The antenna is responsible to transmit a signal between the key fob and the receiver module. An OBDII scan will help diagnose the problem by revealing what's wrong with the system. The scanner will ask for details about your vehicle like the make and model along with the engine type and VIN number.

Faulty Receiver Module

The key fob is equipped with a receiver module which transmits signals to lock and unlock the key fob. If this module is damaged, all of the on-board electronic components will stop functioning. If this happens, reprogramming with an OBDII scanner or replacing the key fob itself may assist.

This problem could be caused by a dead coin-cell, water damage or signal interference. You can reset the on-board computer by disconnecting the 12 Volt batteries for 15 minutes. This will eliminate any remaining electrical energy that could be causing issues. Remove the cable first from the negative terminal, then from the positive terminal. After 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order beginning with positive first, and negative second.

The internal chip inside the key fob can also be damaged by dirt or water. If your key stopped working after being wet, you need to clean the electronic component with isopropyl alcohol or an electronics cleaner before installing the battery. If the key ceases to function after exposure to soapy or salted water, it is likely that the chip has become fried and needs to be replaced.

A faulty antenna module fuse may also be the cause. This is the fuse that sends an alert to the vehicle to lock or unlock. The fuse could be found in a variety of places, based on the model. For instance, it could be under the rear seat exeo key programming or trunk, or on the side of the dashboard.
