The slot is a great option for wideouts who are quick, since they can open up more easily when their route won't be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who can benefit from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list features more possession-based receivers that are more effective on intermediate and short routes than in deep areas like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy, who will be the Rams main slot receiver this year is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a greater role in downfield targets. Hamler is expected to be a natural on short-to-mid-long and intermediate routes, because that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be an excellent replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver takes in the slot can be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. However, it's not always an accurate representation of a receiver's skill set since certain receivers excel in the slot but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

For instance For instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery leads the league in targets per game (4.8) but is only placed sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets have come from the outside, and it is difficult to get a first down on a wide-open, deep route in that situation.

Certain receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. For instance the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps last season, and he completed an astounding 74% of his slot routes, compared to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant difference and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of the time on his passing downs. He has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However, he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes in the last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are usually more effective when lining up inside, as they can get targeted way down the field and frequently are in one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to create pressures during the pass game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the highest tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Through using McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime packages and then deploying McDuffie on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. Additionally, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a tremendous benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter, their slot counterparts are also just as good. As a group, wide receivers with a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns at roughly the same amount as those who play on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.

This is why it's fascinating to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 because he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of them. He's running more routes in the slot than many of the players listed on this chart. This is a great method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

He also plays at the X-position and makes big plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this ranking, but he's still an extremely high-quality receiver and is an excellent player for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player who's capable of putting up huge numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiving rating and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also an excellent player for contested-catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps so far this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a valuable part of his team's defensive unit. On the other hand, he's struggled to stop passes from the outside and has given the negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety who can't match Hilton's speed, size and ability to run routes.
