The iRobot J7+ was a fantastic obstacle avoidance robot however, it didn't always do a good job in avoiding crumbs or dirt on my rugs. It also had a tendency to over-vacuum certain areas, which resulted in a lot of dust in the filters, and a less clean home.

Smart Mapping

The best robot vacuum and mop for pets robot vacuums have an app that lets you customize cleaning modes, set schedules and see the flooring area that the machine covers. This is a useful feature that many competitors don't have. It allows you to create profiles that automatically start the robot at specific times, and keep it running continuously. For example, it could be cleaning the living room every day or before dinner.

A good app will also allow you to control your robot with voice commands. Some models support Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant and can work completely hands-free. You can say "start a clean" or "change cleaning mode" without having to use the app.

Our test subjects who tested robots with this capability found it to be extremely efficient, and could easily watch TV or complete other chores while the robot cleaned. Some models employ laser navigation to create an outline of your home. You can then program them to clean the bedroom after dinner, or in all rooms while you are at work.

App Control

If you'd like to alter the frequency at which the robot cleans your house and select the cleaning mode it is recommended to purchase one that works with an app for mobile devices. A robot that has a self-emptying bin and washable filters makes it easy to keep hygienic, especially when you are able to easily access the filter and remove it to wash it. Another excellent feature is a high-powered brush that gets into corners and along baseboards making it much easier to clean up hair and dirt. Some robots are more adept at avoiding chair legs than others, and some also have an auto-cleaning sensor that helps prevent the clogging of brushes that can be a problem in other robots.

Some robot vacuums come with navigation tools to help them navigate around obstacles and help you understand your home. High-end models are equipped with sensors and cameras that detect obstacles such as furniture, stairs and cords, while cheaper models may utilize boundary strips that you place on the floor to mark areas you don't want it to enter.
