Remotes

Replacing a Lexus remote or fob is a complicated process and requires skilled locksmiths equipped with the right tools as well as knowledge. Certain models require the transponder on the key to be changed so that it can work with the immobiliser of the vehicle. The Lexus models use different methods to program these chips. This is accomplished by making use of a special device that sends a code to the chip to unlock the doors or to start the engine.

Some Lexus automobiles are built with a single unit which includes the key head as well as the remote. They are much easier to replace because no separate chip is required. This kind of key is also less expensive.

Transponder Chips

Nearly all new cars built since 1995 have transponder chips embedded in the head of the key to disable the immobiliser system. The head of a key which is equipped with a transponder chip may be removed to reveal a steel L-shaped key. A transponder-chip replacement key or fob is a process that involves multiple stages. It involves cutting keys precisely and programming the chip to sync up with the vehicle immobiliser.

A transponder is a type of chip with Non-Volatile Memory. It has a set of windings, which are very delicate wires that are twisted around the tube. They look like the ones in an electric motor. The windings are coded to create a signal for the car to read. If the code is correct it will allow the car to start.

There are two kinds of transponder chips. One known as the 80 bit, and the other is known as a circle + (General Motors). The first is reusable but must be delocked by a specific machine in order to be used in a compatible vehicle. The latter is more difficult because the previous ones are often broken and then drilled through or thrown away when key cases are replaced. They can be salvaged, however for use with an ad-hoc key that does not require a battery to function.

Immobiliser Systems

An immobiliser system is a digital security device which prevents thieves from opening your car. It operates by sending an electronic signal from the vehicle to the key whenever you try to start it. The electronic chip in the key responds by transmitting a unique code that must match that of the vehicle to allow it to start. If the codes do not match, the engine will immediately shut down to prevent theft.

When the fob or key is inserted into the ignition, they send this code to the ECU. The ECU is able to compare this code with the one stored in its memory, and activates both the fuel system and the ignition circuit if they match. If the codes don't match then the engine will not start even if the ignition circuit is cut off by a criminal.

The replacement of keys or fobs involves multiple steps that include cutting the new key blade accurately and programming it to ensure that it can be synced with your car's security system.
