I also appreciated the way he was able to defeat the villain without threatening him or chasing after him. Instead, he used insinuation.

Heyer subtly emphasized the limitations women face in this period. Leonie is not keen on trading in her breeches and riding side-saddle to wear layers of skirts, petticoats and dresses. She also doesn't want to ride on the side saddle and shoots villains (despite it being a dangerous job). While Avon is somewhat irritated by her erratic ways at first but he soon realizes that he loves her.

It was a bit challenging to keep track of the story at first, because Heyer calls the Duke various names on the first few pages. Once you have figured it out, the book becomes much easier to understand. This was a wonderful book and I would highly recommend it! If you're a lover of Georgette Heyer or simply enjoy an enjoyable romance I can assure you that you won't be disappointed!

Avon's Relationship to Davenant
